So I am finally done with the first nine weeks of med school!! I'm now 6.25% doctor and only have 3.75 more years to go! Finals ended last week and this weekend, to say the least, was absolutely fantastic. Having nothing pressing to do, I spent most of my weekend relaxing with friends and good food and assorted wines. Yes, I did partake in the traditional collegian way of having a good time (booze), which was only FAIR considering that finals week was probably the most painful week of my life. What was finals week like? Let's just say that it was like taking four MCATs in one week, all of which were scored and counted for your med school applications.
Unfortunately, such bliss was very VERY short-lived because in med school, the concept of breaks is nonexistent. Monday morning at 8AM, we were back to the grind, starting a new day with Immunology bright and early. It was interesting because although a lot of information was covered this first CORE block, I learned more about how to learn (i.e. how to study), than actually studying. For those of you who are thinking, "Oh shit, Priyanka, you didn't study...you better get your act together" not to worry though, most of what was covered over the last few weeks was my entire Biology degree of four years.
Today a surgeon came to talk to us about what it's like to be a surgeon. He was a colon and rectal surgeon with personality and pizazz:
"I see a lot of patients with colon problems. You wouldn't believe how many assholes are out there."
He also brought up a lot of interesting points about other areas of surgery that he chose not to go into for certain reasons. For example, he said that he found plastic surgery to be the ONLY field of medicine where you can take someone completely healthy and make them sick. That is so true! I'll admit that I was originally interested in plastic surgery from the point that I could do reconstructive surgery in third-world countries (which is needed very badly by the way), but at the end of the day, according to this guy, "you gotta pay the bills, and most Plastic surgeons end up doing boobs and liposuction to pay those bills." So, I'd rather not. Check one more off the list!
Or Life as a Medical Student. (but not completely all about medicine because sometimes, you can just get sick of talking about the good ole' MD)
